Should I operate under that assumption and just send the IRS a copy of the decree and itemized expenses from PSBI (our adoption agency) or should I wait for their letter. Upon checking my records, I discovered that I did not attach the copy of the adoption decree to form 8839. I checked the status of my anticipated 2010 tax refund online today. If the former, where should I send the documentation and how do I reference the tax return. I found out that the IRS is sending me a letter asking for more information. I assume that this is what the IRS will ask for.

When the doing the credit for adoption I understand that it cannot be filed electronically. What I want to know is if I can file my normal taxes and then file an addendum or an addition onto the taxes that I filed earlier and thereby getting two refunds
A: I think it would be mute file without the credit then to file an amendment. I have checked the IRS website and they will start accepting returns that were affected by the law changes on February 14th.

This past year I adopted a foster child. I have been going to school and living with my parents. My dad is claiming me as a dependent. Can he also qualify for the adoption tax credit because of our new son?
A: idon't think so because he didn't adopt the child. you did. Did he pay for the adoption fees? however your dad can claim your child as a qualifying child. That way he gets the child tax credit and another 3400 exemption.
